Lawrie, Lee O.

Lee O. Lawrie Collection (124), Sculptor, 1877-1963

Lee O. Lawrie, architectural sculptor, was a key figure in the American art scene preceding World War II. With over 300 commissions, Lawrie's style evolved through Modern Gothic, to Beaux-Arts, Classicism, and, finally, into Moderne or Art Deco. His projects include the Atlas at New York City's Rockefeller (1937), the bronze doors of the John Adams Building of the Library of Congress, and a frieze on the Nebraska State Capitol.

The collection comprises 11 plaster maquettes depicting elements of the sundial created for the Bok Singing Tower in Mountain Lake, Florida, designed by architect Miton Medary.  The maquettes are studies for signs of the zodiac that are incorporated in a border around the dial proper and were modeled by an associate of Lee Lawrie's -- Robert C. Wakeman.
